New York, United States

Quest to Learn (Q2L) is a school in New York that was established in accordance with the principles of game design and has developed the principle of game-based learning. Q2L works in close cooperation with the Institute of Play. Every day, the pupils at Q2L study together to solve highly complex tasks and they do so in a playful setting. This enables the pupils to learn the material set out in the curriculum whilst dealing with creative and constantly changing formats.

The people behind the school particularly emphasise the importance of continually developing the challenges they present to the children; this work is undertaken together with teachers, communication experts and game developers. The school’s learning structure is based on three themes: 1) learning together and from one another with the help of technology; 2) the changing role of teachers (towards people who mediate between the pupils’ lives in school and the outside world); 3) and the wealth of data provided by games, which can continuously provide feedback to players on their learning needs. Accordingly, the school does not conduct direct appraisals of student performances at the end of the learning process, but integrates them into the games themselves.
